Don’t Ignore It, Store It: How to Protect Outdoor Gear During Winter Storage

When the days get shorter and the temperature drops, it’s tempting to pack away your outdoor gear and forget about it until spring. But a little care before storage can make all the difference when it comes to keeping your kit in top condition – and saving you money in the long run.

From tents and awnings to backpacks and garden furniture covers, here’s how to make sure everything stays protected through the winter months.

  1. Clean Before You Store

Dirt, mud and salt don’t just look bad; they can break down waterproof coatings and fabrics over time. Before putting your gear away, give it a good clean using the right products for the job. To remove dirt and debris from larger outdoor equipment like tents and awnings, dilute Universal Cleaner into water and work into the surface using a soft brush or sponge. For smaller items, a thorough spritz of Tent + Awning Cleaner will do the trick. Simply work the cleaning solution in with a damp cloth, and wipe away the dirt and stains. Let everything dry completely before moving on to the next step.

  1. Reproof to restore protection

Once your gear is clean and dry, it’s the perfect time to reproof. Regular reproofing helps restore the water-repellent barrier that keeps you dry and extends the life of your kit. This layer of protection helps shield your equipment from cold, moisture and stains. For the highest level of performance, Fabsil Gold and Universal Protector UV are industry leaders when it comes to waterproofing gear that is regularly exposed to the elements, such as parasols, garden furniture and soft-top car roofs. Universal Protector UV offers protection from rain, stains and UV rays, whilst Fabsil Gold offers highly-concentrated, durable protection. Apply your chosen reproofer thoroughly — either by spraying smaller items or painting onto larger ones – to make sure every area is covered, then allow it to dry completely.

(If there’s a piece of kit that isn’t going into winter hibernation and needs protection from the low temperatures and turbulent weather, we recommend Fabsil Gold for the ultimate seasonal protection.)

  1. Store in a cool, dry place

Avoid damp garages, sheds or lofts where condensation can build up. Instead, find a well-ventilated, dry area to keep your gear safe. Store tents and awnings loosely (not tightly folded) to prevent creases and damage to coatings.

  1. Check on it every once in a while

It’s worth giving your stored gear a quick check during the colder months. Look out for signs of damp or damage and give items an extra airing if needed. A little maintenance now can prevent disappointment when you’re ready to head back outdoors.

Taking the time to clean, reproof and store your outdoor kit properly ensures it’s ready to perform when adventure calls again. When spring returns, the last thing you want is to discover your gear hasn’t weathered the winter as well as it should have. So, follow these simple steps to protect your gear, maintain its performance and keep it looking fresh all winter long.
